Another Veteran Passes AwayJames Smothers, a pioneer resident of this county and a veteran of the Civil War, answered the final roll call Monday at 2 a.m. at the home of his son, William. Smothers, three miles northwest of Goshen.Deceased had been ill since last May and death resulted from dropsy. At the time of falling ill Mr. Smothers was in Arkansas in hopes of benefiting his health but relatives here were apprised by physicians that his condition was alarming and his son, William, made a trip there and brought the father to his home where he had since been cared for.Mr. Smothers was born in Mercer County on July 7, 1846 and was therefore sixty-five years of age. The greater part of his life was spent in this county. He espoused the Federal cause during the Civil War and was later given an honorable discharge. In later years since his health began to fail he spent two or three years in the Soldiers Home at Leavenworth, Kas.Deceased is survived by six children - William, Ed , and Albert Smothers and Mrs. Alice Sharp, all of whom reside near Goshen; Mrs. J. C. Solel, of this city; and Mrs. J. M. Bowen, of Smithville, MO.Of a quiet and retiring manner, Mr. Smothers gained the confidence and respect of his fellow men and in his loss the sorrowing children have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services took place Monday afternoon at the Cain cemetery, being conducted by Rev. V. M. Harper, of Cainsville.Published 20 Sep 1911 , Princeton, Mercer, MissouriEndnotes
