Some have said Elizabeth was the widow of a Mr. Iveson, an d family legend has it that she might have been the grandda ughter of Lord Bacon. This information on Elizabeth from Sh aron Clark This information in question, refer to notes of William Sum ter, her husband.************************* From information sent to me by Ji m Young (refer to Thomas Sumter, Sr. notes): "Granny Sumte r lived about fifteen miles northeast of Charlottesville (A lbemarle Co., VA) and had extensive practice as a medical p ractitioner and midwife there being but one physician in Al bemarle County. Her daughter, Mrs. Suddarth (Patience Sumt er Suddarth, wife of James) succeded her."Also from same source: "There are various stories concernin g the marriage to Mr. Sumter. One is to the effect that wh ile the lady was on her way to this country her husband die d and that on arrival she met and was courted by Mr. Sumter . Another is to the effect that she married Mr. Sumter i n England and that her daughter (Patience) was born on ship board during the voyage to America. There is no documentar y evidence to support either story and considerable reaso n to doubt the accuracy of both. There is no doubt, howeve r, that she was very active in Albemarle County as a midwif e and a very strong and active woman. One story has her li ving to the age of one hundred and eleven
