William SUMPTER

(18 Aug 1695 - 7 Jul 1752)

Will proved 07 Jul 1752 (Louisa Co., VA?).According to Draper MSS: The only daughter born to Willia m and wife Elizabeth was Patience. William and Elizabeth s ettled in Hanover Co., VA where William owned and operate d a grist mill on Preddy's Creek near Piney Mountain. Th e county is now Albemarle but was Louisa County in 1743-5 2 and Hanover County in 1734-43. It was here that their fi ve children were born. Patience lived with her first husba nd, John (Benjamin) Franklin, between Charlottesville and S taunton, VA. Mr. Franklin died of lock-jaw. He was suppos edly the nephew of Benjamin Franklin. There are some researchers that have this William as born H iston, Cambridge, ENG 16 aug 1695 who married Elizabeth Pat ience Dulce Iveson. However, that is proven questionable b y the fact that William Thomas Sumter of Histon, died 20 Ma y 1753 and his wife E.P.D. Iveson died 20 Jul 1740 in ENG . When William Sumter of VA's will was filed in Nov 1752 , HIS wife Elizabeth was still alive and was mentioned in t his will written July 1752. Therefore these are not the sa me SUMTERS as the ones in England. In regard to the above: From: Jim Young, RR 3, Box 329-A , McAlester, OK 74501 the following:Matilda Adams of California recently concluded extensive re search into the films at the Latter Day Saints Library in S alt Lake City. Matilda engaged a professional researcher t o help her search the records.LDS films #496700 and #1040483 contain parish records fro m Histon, Cambridge,England. The following data taken fro m these films proves that William andElizabeth (IVERSON) SU MPTER are NOT the parents of General Thomas SUMTER.1695 William SUMPTER born to Nicklas and Katherine (MATHEWS ) SUMPTER. 9 Feb 1724 John IVERSON died in Histon, England . 1729 William SUMPTER married Elizabeth IVERSON (widow). 1 0 July 1740 Elizabeth SUMPTER, wife of William, dies in His ton, England. 20 May 1753 William SUMPTER dies in Histon, E ngland.Several children born: John, Thomas, Mary, Ann, Elizabet h and Mary (also death records for some). Conclusion: Since all of the above events occurred in Engla nd, William and Elizabeth (IVERSON) SUMPTER apparently ar e not the William and Elizabeth SUMPTER of Louisa County, V A and whom we believe are the parents of: Captain William ; General Thomas; John; Edmund; and Patience [(FRANKLIN) SU DDARTH].The parents of General Thomas SUMTER, William and Elizabet h SUMPTER, died in Virginia. William's will was writte n 7 July 1752 and filed November 1752; and Elizabeth SUMPTE R lived to be 111 years old. She lived with her daughteri n Virginia until long after the Revolutionary War and die d early 1800s in Virginia. Also from Jane Sumpter Malone-George the following: "I have in my possession copies of copie s of two letters from a Mrs. Bone, 46 Metcalfe Road, Cambri dge CB4-2DD, England in which she has searched the Histon r ecords and others determining that the above William and El izabeth Iveson Sumpter are not the parents of the General T homas Sumter of Revolutionary War fame. Unfortunately, th e information that William and Elizabeth Iveson Sumpter ar e the parents of General Sumter has been printed so much th at it is assumed to be true. It is not and we must continu e our serach for the English ancestry of General Sumter an d his siblings."The Will of William Sumter: Will Book 1, pp 26, Louisa Co. , VA In the name of God Amen, I William Sumter of Louisa Co unty, colony and Dominion of Virginia being weak of body bu t perfect mind and memory blessed be God Do make and ordai n this my last will and testament, that is to say, first o f all I recommend my Soul and Spirit unto the hands of Almi ghty God that give it nothing counting (?) (page torn) tha t at the General ressurrection I shall receive it, to the E arth from whence it came to be buried in Christian like man ner, at the discretion of my wife and executors hereafter n amed and touching what worldly estate the Lord hath blesse d me with I dispose of one Mare to my son William Sumter an d one halter and I give my son John Sumter one mare and y e rest of my estate I dispose of the same manner and form f ollowing Imprimas I give to my beloved wife Elizabeth Sumt er the use of allmy estate real and personal (page torn) mo vables and household furniture during her natural life, i f she remains a widow, but if she marries, the said goods a nd (torn) my executors hereafter named sold to the best adv antage and distributed equally between my children. By th e discretion of my executors and I do hereby ordain and app oint Joseph Phillips and William Sumter executors to this m y last will and testament likewise disannul and revoke al l other wills and testaments declared and pronounced by m e this seven day of July in the twenty six year of the Reig n of George ye second Ann Dom 1752. William Sumter (his mar k) (torn) day of November 1752 admitted to record.(This transcripton of the will from manuscript of Jane A. ( Sumpter) Malone-George; 3294 Lake Ridge Dr., Apt. A; Dubuqu e, IA 52003-7796 furnished to me by Jim Young, RR 3, Box 3 29-A, McAlester, OK 74501). A good deal of this informatio n was assembled by Ward C. Sumpter, who is included in thi s data base and was a descendant of the son of William, Edm und Sumter/Sumpter and his wife Ann.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: Jane Malone-Ge orge Subject: Re: book "THE GAMECOCK " Date: Tue, 11 Nov 97 15:51:57 PSTThe book "The Gamecock" was written by Robert D. Bass and p ublishedby Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York. Several ye ars ago, I obtained a copy through interlibrary loan. It i s a decent account of General Sumter's life and does list o nly the following sibblings: William, Thomas, Patience an d Anne. We know for sure that there was at least a brothe r John and a sister Martha. Most researchers seem to belie ve that Edmond of Charlotte Co, VA, is also a brother. Will iam married Judith Randall (1) and had the following childr en: John married Ann Alexander; William (jr) married Jan e ? and possibly a first wife; James married Nancy Jinkins : Thomas married Lydia Kirkpatrick; Elizabeth married Edw ard Owings or Owens; Amelia married ?Buckner; Fielding mar ried Sarah ?; Judith married ? Randall and Livingston marri ed Charlotte Temple.Tradition - according to William jr's wife Jane when she ta lked to Dr. Lyman Draper - says that following Judith Randa ll Sumpter's death, William remarried and became the fathe r of a total of 19 children. To date, I have no record o f a second marriage or who the woman was.John married Catherine ? about 1762. Their children: John ; Henry married Peggy Taylor; Thomas married Elizabeth Coff ey; James; Catherine possibly married Hiram Geren; Betty ma rried Richard Ramsey; William; Polly married Gabriel Loving ; Martha married Abraham Sudderth.Thomas marrried Mary Cantey Jameson. They had only one sur viving child: Thomas, Jr., who married Nathalie deLage abo ut 1802.Patience married first John Franklin and had Anne, Dorcas , Elizabeth and Maria. Patience married second James Sudde rth and had William, James, Agnes, Sally and Mildred.Ann married Thomas Land, Sr. Children unknown to me at thi s time.Edmond married Claudine (Anne) ? and had the following children: Mary Anne; William married Betsy Wheeler; Thomas married Mary Todd; Martha (Patsy); Aggy; John married Hanna Mor rison; Susanna married L. Tackett; Andrew married Kezziah ? ; and Nanny.Martha married William Sudderth in Albemarle Co, VA. I have no record of their children.
