Individual Details

Roy Mitchell Briles

(27 Jun 1897 - 16 Aug 1975)

He is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside his grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the daughter of son of Jasper Briles. Since he was born in 1897, he would have been about 12 when this photo was taken.

In a phone conversation with his daughter Susan Briles Kniebes in early May 2003, Worthie Elwood Briles (the son of Worthie Harwood Briles, who was the son on Enoch Elwood Briles) told Susan that his father remembered playing with Roy when they were children. Worthie Harwood was born in 1894, and Roy was born in 1897, so they certainly would have been the correct ages to be playmates.

According to Leona Hays Connally Briles, the wife of the only son of Jasper's brother Enoch Elwood Briles, Jasper sent Roy to school in Italy, Texas, every winter. Roy went by train, and his Uncle Enoch Elwood Briles met him in Fort Worth and took him to Italy, also by train. Roy graduated from high school at the age of 16 (recall that his mother Hattie Sawyer was also supposed to have been very smart) and got a scholarship to the University of Texas in Austin. However, the University wouldn't take him because he was so young, so he went home to Oklahoma, where Jasper had Roy go to school with his step-brother, Arley. Roy once told Leona that the young teacher would have Roy stay in during the afternoon recess and help the teacher translate the Latin that he was to teach the older students that afternoon.

See the information from the 1910 U.S. Census in the Notes for his grandmother Emily Nancy Sawyer, which has him living with his mother and uncle Enoch Elwood Briles in Italy, Texas, in 1910.

See the information from the 1920 U.S. Census in the Notes for his father Jasper Briles, which has Roy living with Jasper, Jasper's second wife Sarah, and Arley Miller (Sarah's son by her first marriage) in Skiatook, Oklahoma.

Roy never married and never had any children.

The list of attendees at the August 4, 1974 Briles Family Reunion at the Legion Hall in Italy, Texas, includes Roy, says he was 77 at the time, and says that he was living in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

The Social Security Administration's Death Index gives his birth date as 27 June 1897; his death date as August 1975; says he died in Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and his SS# as 442-07-2058
