Hattie Sawyer
(28 Jun 1879 - 23 May 1903)
She died in a flood in Western Oklahoma. She is supposed to have been a niece of Jasper's mother and, thus, Jasper's first cousin. We now know that this piece of family history is true. She was the daughter of Emily Nancy Sawyer Briles's brother George W. Sawyer.
Another family source says that she died in 1903 in Texas instead of 1902 in Oklahoma.
According to Leona Hay Connally, the wife of the son of Jasper's brother Enoch Elwood Briles, Jasper and Hattie were living in Sayer, Oklahoma, when the flood occurred. Jasper and his son Roy continued to live there for several years after Hattie and her younger son died. Then they sold their property in Sayer and moved to Skiatook. Elsewhere, Leona says that they moved from Sayer to Skiatook when Roy was 11 years old, which would be about 1908.
Note that Hattie Sawyer married Jasper Briles and her mother was a Briles, Mary A. Briles, who was married to George Sawyer. Jasper is the son of Daniel Eli Briles. Mary Briles is the daughter of Oliver Briles. Oliver and Daniel are brothers.
Additioanl information provided by Terrance Tyler-During the flood in May, 1903, the Jasper Briles family was living south of the Rainy Mountain Cemetery. Their home was swept away in the flood. Briles and his older son were clinging to a tree, when Gotebo heard them early the next morning, then swam out and saved them. Mrs. Briles and the younger son were found later, downstream, drowned. They are buried in Gotebo, Oklahoma Cemetery.
