Willie Lee "Billie" Jordan

Billie Varner wore many hats during her lifetime. She was of good Scots blood; the daughter of Julia Wilkerson Jordan and Arthur Morgan Jordan. She studied nursing through Baptist Hospital in Columbia, S.C. where she also graduated from nursing school. She married Dr. John Wesley Varner in 1934, and they moved to Lexington, N.C. At that time she became mother to Roy (now deceased), John Jr., and Virginia. She became active in various organizations and volunteer activities including the First United Methodist CHurch, the American Red Cross, the Davidson County Sesquicentennial Association, the Davidson County Writers Club, the Tar Heel Writers Round Table, and the North Carolina Poetry Society.
Billie published her first book of poetry, Come Share My World With Me, in 1977. This was followed by Woodland Footpaths and A Sharing of Life. Each of these books won second place in their respective years from the North Carolina Poetry Council. Her fourth book, Collected Poems was published on her 80th birthday.
