Robert Downer
( - Abt 1664)
See "Ruf, Haight, Eddy, Summer, Hatch and allied families" by Alpha H. Ruf dated 1932, page 91, found at Heritage Quest Online: "As a family name Downer carried the significance "inhabititant of a down," "down" being the name given to an open, high and rolling pasture region, especially in the south of England. The branch of the Downer family from which the American family here considered is descended was early located in Wiltshire, England, which county is famed for its noted archaeological treasure "Stonehege"."
