Relationship between Joseph Bouton Hoyt and his daughter Samantha is based on the applications for membership into Sons of the Revolution by Melvin Arthur Bresee dated 4 June 1933 and Phineas Johnson Bresee, Sons of the Revolution application dated 30 Dec 1948. These are undocumented applications to the SR.

1844 death is from "A Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight, and Hight families" by David W. Hoyt dated 1871 page 441. FHC film 4997 Probate records New Canaan, Fairfield Co., CT, page 54: Joseph B. Hoyt (his son) was appointed administrator on the estate of Joseph B. Hoyt late of New Canaan deceased; page 55 shows Joseph B. Hoyt's estate is determined to be insolvent; and on page 55, the court authorizes the sale of assets to pay off debts.

1841 per FHC film 4960 page 116 "Congregational Church of New Canaan, CT" Joseph B. Hoyt Jr. was under admissions to the church on 4 July 1841. Therefore, this must be the son of Joseph Bouton Hoyt and Thankful Benedict since this is the same church, in 1818, that Joseph B. Hoyt, Jr. was baptized in (see below).

1840 census for New Canaan, Fairfield Co., CT, shows a Joseph B. Hoyt age 60-70 (he would be age 65) living with a male age 20-30 (this could be Joseph B. Hoyt, Jr. born 1810-1820), a son age 15-20 (born 1820-1825) and a female age 15-20 (this could be Janice Ann born 1823). The mother, Thankful, is missing.

1830 census for New Canaan, CT, shows Joseph B. Hoyt age 50-60 ( he is 55) living with a female his wife's age and children matching his son's age and three females none of which matches Samantha since she was married a year earlier.

1820 census for Joseph B. Hoyt in New Canaan, Fairfield Co., CT, shows a male age 45+ (this would be Joseph B. Hoyt age 45) living with a male age 0-10 (this could be Joseph B. Jr. age 5), unknown male age 10-16, unknown female age 0-10, a female age 10-15 (this could be Samantha age 15), a female age 16-25 (this may be Mehitable age 19) and a female age 26-44 (this may be his wife, Thankful age 39).

1816 per FHC film 4960 section 3 page 100 and page 213 Joseph and Samatha Hoyt were under admissions to the Congregational Church of New Canaan, CT on 1 Sept 1816.

1810 census for Jos B. Hoyt in New Canaan, Fairfield Co., CT shows 2 unknown males ages 16-25, one male age 26-44 (this would be Joseph B. Hoyt age 35) 4 females age 0-9 (this would include daughters Mehitable age 9, Samantha age 4 and 2 unknown females) and one female age 26-44 (this would be his wife Thankful age 29).

1800 marriage is from "A Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight, and Hight families" by David W. Hoyt dated 1871 page 441 and states family lived in New Canaan and there were children but no names. Also confirmed FHC film 4960 "Congregational Church of New Canaan, CT" and "The Barbour Collection" of Connt. Town Vital Records page 210 at the SAR library. Children of this marriage are not shown.

1775 birth date and baptism date is from "A Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight, and Hight families" by David W. Hoyt dated 1871 page 441. Baptism date also confirmed by FHC film 4960 "Congregational Church of New Canaan, CT" page 57.
