Emigration (fam)10 Jun 1838on board the 'Mandarin" from Belfast. They arrived in Sydney 19/10/1838 and went to the Berkeley Estate near Lake Illawarra to take up a 'clearing lease' (the clearing lease system allowed families to live rent free off the land for a period of six years on the condition they cleared the land for future farming) with daughter Ann & her husband Samuel McCauley. The surname appears as Mcilpatrick on the passenger list, most likely because William & Sarah were over 40 which would have precluded them from attracting a bounty for their passage. Their older daughters Elizabeth & Isabella were recorded with their correct surname & declared their relationship with Ann McCauley - Sarah MCLACHLAN
