Christian SHOFFNER

It is not known if Christian Shoffner's wife Susanna is the mother of Amos, Abby Ann, and Susanna or if Christian was married before since he is listed with a female 20 to 29 years old in the 1840 census. His daughter Abby Ann Ferringer's death certificate gives her mother's name as Mary Himes. His daughter Susan Van Dyke's death certificate does not give her mother's name. Christian Shoffner's wife Susanna was married to John George Himes before she married him. Therefore, it is difficult to determine if Christian may have been married to Mary Himes first or if Mary Himes and Susanna are the same person. Although Susanna was born about 1796, she was still young enough to be the mother of Abby Ann and Susanna but would have been in her 40's when they were born. Christian Shoffner will be listed with two wives until further information is available since there is not enough evidence to determine if Mary Himes and Susanna are the same person. The fact that Christian Shoffner is listed in the 1840 census with a female 20 to 29 years old indicates that he was probably married twice. His second wife Susanna in her will leaves her property to the heirs of her two sons by her first marriage after her husband Christian Shoffner's death. If she were the mother of Amos, Abby Ann, and Susanna, it would be natural for her to mention them also in her will but she does not.
