Birth
Martha's birth date is calculated from the date of death and age of 72 years, 2 months, and 12 days given on her tombstone. There is less than 6 months between Martha's birth on 2 March 1832 and her sister Ellen's birth date on 9 September 1831. Ellen's birthdate is calculated from the date of death and age given on her tombstone. The 1900 census for Martha gives her birth date as March 1832. One of them has to be wrong. Martha's death record gives her age as 71 years. She would have been born in 1833 if she was 71 when she died. This is consistent with her age in the 1860 through the 1880 censuses. Her birth date was probably 1833 since it is consistent with her death record and earlier censuses.Endnotes
