Individual Details

Nancy CLAWSON

(From Abt 1798 to 1800 - Bet 16 Dec 1862 and 23 Jan 1863)

Nancy Clawson who married James Fleming (about 1782-1844) was probably related to Richard B. Clawson and Benjamin Clawson who were witnesses to James Fleming's will in 1844. Richard B. Clawson was also one of the appraisers for the inventory of the estate of James Fleming. Richard B. Clawson (1811-1896) was a son of Benjamin Clawson
(1781-1865). Benjamin Clawson was a son of Richard Closson (died about 1826) and Sarah Mitchell. Nancy was not a daughter of Richard Closson and Sarah Mitchell since there is an Orphans' Court record in Indiana County listing their 11 children. There were three other Clawson/Closson/Clauson men in Black Lick Township that were probably Richard Closson's brothers: Josiah, John, and Daniel. She was not a daughter of Daniel Clauson since he named his children in his will. Josiah left a will but did not name all his children in his will. Josiah's son Miller who inherited his father's property was single when he died intestate in 1877. His property was sold to pay his debts but there was money left in his account to be paid to his heirs. His estate records in Indiana County need checked to see if they name his siblings or nieces and nephews. Nancy was probably a daughter of Josiah or John Clawson but more information is necessary to determine how she is related to the Clawson family in Black Lick Township in Indiana County.

The Clawson connection continued when James Fleming's son James died in 1898. There was a civil court case B. Clawson vs. Daniel Kennedy and James Fleming estate. Daniel Kennedy was James Fleming's son-in-law and the executor of his estate. The judgment of the court was for B. Clawson.

Nancy married David Davis after James Fleming's death. She and her daughter, Nancy Jane Fleming, are mentioned in his will. Nancy writes a will in 1862 that mentions her son, James Fleming, her daughter, Nancy Jane Gordon, and five of her granddaughters. This helps to prove who her daughters, Eliza and Charlotte, married.

William Fleming, the son of James and Nancy Fleming, married Nancy Davis, the daughter of David Davis, Nancy's second husband. They are all living in David Davis' household in the 1850 census.
