Birth
Although his birth is registered in Indiana County, Pennsylvania as 3 October 1893, all other records give his birthdate as 3 October 1894.Military
According to his discharge paper, he enlisted as a private in Company F, 110th Infantry at Indiana, Pennsylvania on 7 May 1917. He was promoted to corporal on October 14, 1918. He served in the following campaigns: 5th German offensive, advance on Ourege Vesle, Neuse-Argonne offensive, and Theaucourt Sector. He sailed for France on May 3, 1918 and returned from France on May 12, 1919. He was discharged from Camp Dix, New Jersey on 23 May 1919. He served in France or Germany with his unit after the armistice on November 11, 1918. His serial number was 1240653. Although his discharge paper indicates he did not receive any wounds and was in good health when discharged, his father-in-law, Jacob Conner Wolfe, said he was gassed in World War I and had health problems as a result.His application to Pennsylvania for veterans compensation in 1934 listed the following engagements he participated in: Champagne-Marne Defensive from July 15 to July 18, 1918; Aisne-Marne Offensive from July 18 to August 6, 1918; Fismens Sector, August 7 to August 17, 1918; Oise-Aisne Offensive from August 18 to September 8, 1918; Meuse-Argonne Offensive from September 26 to October 9, 1918; and Thiacourt Sector from October 15 to November 11, 1918.
He was approved for the Victory Metal in 1922 with the following battle clasps: Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne, Meuse-Argonne, and Defensive Sector (II Army from October 1 to November 11, 1918).
