LINEAGE
A. Conflict: Listed as Pine's son in Luahine (McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, vol 2 p 85).
LIFE
A. He was a warrior chief under Kalaniopu'u who instructed and advised Kamehameha (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 192). He was rescued by Kamehameha in battle with men of Kahekili (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 84). He was saved ruling chief Kalaniopuu from accompanying Captain Cook to his ship as ransom for the loss of Cook's row boat (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 102).
B. He was both chief and kahuna. He entreated Kamehameha to become ruler after the death of Kalaniopuu (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 117).
C. Fragment: He has a son named Ka-uluhai-malama (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 236).
D. He died in 1784 from accidental spear wound in training exercise at Napo'opo'o, Kona (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 319; Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 126).
E. Contemporaries in late 1700s: Kamehameha and cousin King Kiwalao, cousin Keoua (half-brother of Kiwalo) and uncle Keawemauhili (brother to Kalaniopuu), Kona chief Kekuhaupio, Keeaumoku, Kameeiamoku (Emerson, Mamala-Hoa, p 16-17).
