LIFE
A. Kahuna of Alapa'i, ruling chief of Hawaii island [before Kalaniopu'u began his reign in 1754] (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 78). Kahuna Nui of Kalaniopu'u, ruling chief of Hawaii island [at least between 1759 and 1778 (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 146,183). "he belonged to the order of Pa'ao" (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 85). Kahuna at time of Kamehamea (1782) (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 309).
B. During the battle between Kalaniopuu and Keaweopala, Holoae informed Kalaniopuu that "the only means of obtaining victory was to kill Kaakau, the priest of Keaweopala, whose prayers and powers prolonged the contest. Acting on the advice, Kaakau was singled out in the battle by Kalaniopuu's soldiers and slain, after which the victory soon was won" (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 146).
