Kepelino
(Abt 1830 - Abt 1878)
LINEAGE
In 1853, Jules Remy received from Kepelino the genealogy of his ancestors back to Paao (Kepelino's Traditions of Hawaii, p 5).
LIFE
A. Zepherino is Kepelino's name rendered in French (Kepelino's Traditions of Hawaii, p 3). Zephyrin was the name given to him at this baptism (Bacil and Mookini, Kepelino's Hawaiian Collection, p 39). Kahoaliikumaieiwakamoku means To-be-the-chief-of-the-nine-districts (Kepelino's Traditions of Hawaii, p 4).
Later in life he penned letters signed as Z. Kahoalii (Kepelino's Traditions of Hawaii, p 5).
B. "When on June 26, 1840, Fathers Walsh and Ernest Heurtel came to Kailua to establish the Catholic mission in that part of the islands, Kepelino's parents were among their earliest converts. The boy was put to school and was later sent to Honolulu to qualify for a teacher's certificate" (Kepelino's Traditions of Hawaii, p 4).
C. Conflict: Although Ahlo, Kamehameha's Children Today, p 65 list Zepherin K. Kaohalii as Kepelino's wife, Kepelino's Traditions of Hawaii, p 4-5 indicates that Kepelino's name was Zepherin and that he never married.
