LIFE
Her mother Luukia spoke of how handsome her brother Ka-uma-ili-ula was. Kaupe'a sailed from Kuai-he-lani and found Ka-uma-ili-ula in Kailua in Kona. They were joined together. When she became pregnant, she returned to Kuai-he-lani in Kahiki. They sailed to the west of Niihau. "Afterward, Ka-uma-ili-ula and his younger brothers sailed to Kahiki to seek out their sister Luukia and the land of the woman of Kuai-he-lani and to see the birth of the child." Unfortunately, they landed at a time of kapu. Ka-uma-ili-ula was burned with fire. The party escaped death by the prayers and chants of aunt Kaulana and of Mahu (Kamakau, Tales and Traditions of the People of Old, p 102-103).
