A. High chief of Maui (Keahikuniaalapalapa, Royal Genealogy of H.R.H.P. Kaikilani IV and her Family. G-53, p 16). He was the "first independent sovereign of Maui. The island of Maui is named for this ruler" (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 39).
"The beginning of his young reign was marked by many ... but Maui-loa subdued them all with the help of his uncle, Haho, ruler of the Big Island, and in return for this help ceded to the Big Island the District of Hana. Maui-Loa established Lahaina as his seat of government" (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 238).
