C. Tradition is he was in the line of the Hawaii kings (Malo, Hawaiian Antiquities, p 247). He was the ancestral chief for Hawaii (Kamakau, Tales and Traditions of the People of Old, p 37). "He was the ancestor of the Hawaiian Kings" (The Hawaiian Spectator, p 219).
Conflict: Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, p 27 indicates the Maui chiefs claimed Hanalaanui as their ancestor.
