Kanipahu

(Abt 1307 - )

LINEAGE
Conflict: Peleioholani, Genealogy of the Robinson Family and Ancient Legends and Chants of Hawaii, p 7 skips 1 generation listing parents as Kukahou (k) and Hinaakeuki (w). So does Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 1 p 249, but p 191 does not skip the generation.
LIFE
A. Birth year 1307 estimated using Stokes' standard 20 years prior to son Kalapana, plus 5 years to account for the possibility that Kalapana was from the second mate of Kanipahu.
B. High chief (Keahikuniaalapalapa, Royal Genealogy of H.R.H.P. Kaikilani IV and her Family. G-53, p 5). Reign of island of Hawaii estimated to be A.D. 1170-1195 (Kalakaua, The Legends and Myths of Hawaii, p 31). When Kamaiole, chief of Kau, caused an insurrection, Kanipahu sent his sons to Waimanu for safety and he fled to Molokai. "Thus Kamaiole assumed the sovereignty of Hawaii almost without opposition." (Kalakaua, The Legends and Myths of Hawaii, p 106). "Kanipahu was overthrown from power by his half brother, the high chief Kama-Iole, and was forced for a time to labor as a servant. The title 'Ohua' memorializes this period of humiliation and servitude and of the profanation of royal sanctity by menial labor. It is a title borne proudly by many princes of the royal houses of Hawaii" (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 129).
C. Order of mates (Malo, Hawaiian Antiquities, p 258).
D. "contemporary with Laa-mai-kahiki" (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 41).
E. Died as a commoner, after slaying Kamiole following his 18 year reign, on Molokai (Kalakaua, The Legends and Myths of Hawaii, p 113). However, Kamakau states that when the Molokai chiefess Hua-lani found out that he was alii, she took him as mate and they had many children (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 4).
F. Fragment: Kamaiole was his half-brother (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 129).
