Individual Details
Dordi Jakobsdatter Hugas
(1877 - 1901)
Per Singsaas Church Newsletter, Jan. 2014:
A Noteworthy Name
Our early Norwegian ancestors named their children with a naming convention called patronyms. A child’s name would based on the given name of one's father. An interesting example of patronymic naming was recently noted.
Jacob C. Hugos (1847 - 1915) and wife Kari (1850 - 1926) gave birth to daughter Dora on April 23rd, 1877. Patronymic naming would be used to create the daughter’s middle name. She was named Dora Jakobsdatter Hugos, and would also use the name Dordi. Her middle name ‘Jakobsdatter’ was a patronym, a part of her personal name indicating she was the daughter of Jacob.
A Hugos Family Mystery
Singsaas has received many inquiries about the Hugos family members in the past year. We mean no disrespect to the interred, but we’ll mention part of this family history in the chance anyone can help family members find information on the deceased.
Jacob, Kari and their daughter Dora are all interred in the Singsaas Cemetery. Kari and her Dora are buried together, while father Jacob is buried separately in a lot which may indicate he was not a congregation member. Dora had a child named Cora Jennie Hugos (b. Sep 28th, 1899) that was born out of wedlock. Father Jacob would chase off the Dora’s suitor who is believed to have the last name ‘Seim’. This is all which is known about this man.
Dora died 2 years later at the age of 24. Her child Cora would be raised by parents Jacob and Kari and some aunts. Cora "Jennie" Hugos Erickson died in 1990 with the life-long regret she never knew her father. Anyone having information can pass this onto the Singsaas Church, and we’ll pass this on to the appropriate Hugos family members.
