WILMA JOYCE HUGHES

(9 Mar 1913 - )

By Patricia Kulhavy November 200(:
My Mom came from a family of 7 children, and was a twin. They lived in the southeastern part of the state. Her father ran a meat market and was the Mayor of Armour South Dakota. They were considered 'well off', so the girls were not taught any domestic skills. Mom took piano lessons and played for the silent movies when she was a teen. After she graduated she went to Hendricks to work in her sister Marj's bakery/cafe and that is where she met my Dad. She never did take to domesticity, but gave it a good try. My Dad was very social and he just kind of took her along with him. She was a good and loving wife and Mom, and did the best she could. Now Dad was a much better cook than Mom. She couldn't boil water when they got married. Dad had helped his Mother in the kitchen and liked to cook so he taught Mom what she knew and she could put a good meal on the table but not like Grandma Goodoien.
