Milton Carold Johnson was born May 29, 1926 at Hendricks to Paul P. and Inga (Moe) Johnson. On October 6th, 1949 he was united in marriage to Verona Aune of Hendricks and this union was blessed with three children, Dennis, Diane and Vickie. They enjoyed over 40 years of marriage until her death in 1993. On January 24, 2007, Milton married Betty Aune of Marshall. Betty added many happy years to Milton’s life, enjoying Polka dances, visiting Milton’s family in California and Norway, and attending his cousin Sherwin Linton’s concerts.
Upon discharge from military service in World War II, he partnered with Pete Moen as Moen & Johnson Standard Service. After Pete’s death, for over 50 years, he proudly served the community as owner of Milt’s Standard. Without eye protection, he pumped gas, checked oil, wrestled with tires and mufflers, despite losing eyesight in one eye as the result of injuries received during the Battle of Okinawa. He was quiet about his service and Purple Heart, but was especially proud of his 60 plus years as a member of The American Legion. He was a true embodiment of America’s Greatest Generation!
Milton was the unofficial patriarch of the entire Johnson family with a remarkable memory for names, dates and the faces to go with them. If he didn’t know who was in an old family photo and when it was taken, nobody did! He kept alive his Norwegian heritage and helped strengthen the bond between family here and his wonderful cousins in Norway. He made several trips back to the family home the latest being this past summer with nephew Jay Johnson where he got to brush up on his Norwegian one last time. Thank you Norway Family!
After retirement, he spent countless hours enjoying all sorts of ballgames with grandchildren and other family members, always proud of their accomplishments. Wherever he went, he would start a conversation with someone, whether they were a relative or someone from another town, he always found a connection with them.
He is survived by his wife, Betty and her son, Dustin of Hendricks, MN; children, Dennis (Marita) of Valley City, CA, Diane (Darryl) Moen of Buffalo, MN and Vickie Hammer of Howard Lake, MN; grandchildren, Michael (Brooke) of Portland, OR, Tracy LaVeque of Grover Beach, CA, Cory (Karina) Johnson of Toluca Lake, CA, Kelsy (Patrick) Robinson of Parachute, CO, Scott (Kristen) Moen of Big Lake, MN, Aaron Moen (fiancé Natalie Fehn) of Buffalo, MN, John Hammer of Hopkins, MN, Jeff Hammer of Howard Lake, MN, Katie Hammer of Howard Lake, MN; seven great-grandchildren Gavin, Garrett, Grace, Avery, Samara, Amelia and Elijah; brothers and sisters, Kenneth (Lois) Johnson of Hendricks, MN, Paul (Winnie) Johnson of Brookings, SD and Ruth (David) Grengs of Farmington, MN; sisters-in-law, Ruth Johnson of Hendricks, MN, Faye Wahl of Hendricks, MN and Marlys Aune of Canby, MN and Lorraine Aune of Flandreau, SD; brother-in-law, Dennis Olson of Montevideo, MN and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
