Lyle Fay Hills
(20 Dec 1913 - 18 Dec 1997)
He was born in Egg Creek Township, McHenry County, ND, a son of Ernest and Minnie (Miller) Hills. He graduated from Granville High School, Granville, ND, and attended the State School of Science at Wahpeton, ND. He helped on the family farm and later worked on the railroad out of Minot, ND, and Great Falls, MT. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy during World War ll, serving from September of 1942 until November of 1945. He was assigned to a submarine tender, the USS Bushnell, and spent 31 months at sea. After his discharge, he purchased the farm on which he lived his entire life. On January 30, 1947, he married Alpha Lovro at Minot. They lived on the farm following their marriage, and for the last 12 years spent the winter months at Minot. Mr. Hills was a member of First Lutheran Church at Granville. He served for 30 years as treasurer of Egg Creek Township. He served 15 years as a supervisor for the North McHenry County Soil Conservation District, and won the North McHenry County Soil Conservation Award in 1970. He was also a member of Granville American Legion Post #155.

Hills; daughters, Linda Haugen and her husband Loren, and LeRae Schnickel and her husband Thomas; grandchildren, Heidi Ulland and her husband Jason, Mark Haugen and Lori Haugen, Luke Schnickel and Santiago Schnickel, and Hannah Rose Hills; great-grandchild, Ashly Ulland; brother, Glen Hills; sisters, Esther Rittenbach and her husband Hilbert and Mildred Wrolstad and her husband Orville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Clifford and Floyd.
Service of Commendation and Committal -- Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, North Dakota, today at 2:30 p.m. Granville American Legion Post #155 will present the family with the U. S. flag in honor of Lyle's service to our country.
