Johan Svensen Troøyen
(1838 - 22 Sep 1911)
Singsasboka Bind III page 388: Moved to Sweden in 1860 and married there.
His family name was
1) in Norway 1838 - 1860: Svensen
2) in Sweden 1861 - 1894: Svensen
3)in USA 1894 - 1911 S. Troien
From Bo Eriksson concerning Johan:
That was not easy to find out when and where Johan Svensson Trooien died. According to the register of "absent people" of the parish of Ostersund, Jamtland, he died February 22, 1911 in the US. I also found in MHS Death Certificate Index that Johan Swenson died February 26, 1911 in Lincoln. I believe Johan Svensson Trooien and Johan Swenson are the same person.
Concerning the names of children: Specially in the countryside of the Scandinavian countries they used alternating patronymic names, but this way of giving family names was ceased gradually and finally ended in about the year of 1900 when a new "name law" was established in 1901. Since the children of Johan Svensson, Oskar and Hulda, were born in a town, they got the family name Svensson, even Hulda, and not Johansson and Johansdotter.
My great grandfather was a farmer, not living in a town, with name Erik Jansson , born 1840 . His son, my grandfather, b. 1869, got the name Johannes Eriksson. Since my father was born 1906 he got the name Johannes (Jan) Erik Eriksson. Also my father's sister got the family name Eriksson.
