Individual Details

Hans Pedersen Digre

(1842 - 1935)

Original Hendricks Settler
Immigrated 1869
Name used as a settler was Henry Peterson but he later changed it to Hans Digre.

None of the daughters married so the family branch is now extinct. Marit (born in 1881) was a school teacher. Christie and Maria (born in 1887) continued to live on the old homestead until their death. Christi was somewhat crippled up and Maria took care of her. They did a whole lot of weaving of rugs as a hobby and business. Maria seemed so full of vigor and it was a surprise to every one that after the passing of Christie, Maria ended in the hospital and passed away also in the matter of only three and a half months.
From the Diamond Jubilee 1874-1949 Singsaas Lutheran Church document dated June 24-26, 1949: Not all with the original settler group were married. One of them soon discovered it was not good for man to live alone. When it became known that Pastor Eielsen would remain in the settlement for a few days, the bachelor made great haste to bring his betrothed from Marshall, Minnesota; and in a few days the first wedding was held in the Lake Hendricks District. Kari P. Trooien, sister of Nils and Ole E. Trooien was the bride and Hans Digre was the groom. The wedding took place in the home of Nils Trooien on October 6, 1874. Paster Eilsen performed the ceremonies and Utheim and Norbeck were the witnesses.

From Singsaas Book translated by Ken Lien:
Hans, born 1842, died, 1935, went to America in 1869, where in 1873 he married Kari Pedersdatter Troøyen (Norst.), born 1844, died 1925, she came to America in 1872 . (This was the first marriage in Singsaas Church in America and also the first in the Lake Hendricks Norwegian Colony). Hans and his wife came to Hendricks on the settlement wagon train in 1873. This story is told in the book "the Immigrants Trek" by Gust Sandro. Hans ran Prairie Farm where the post office for the colony was located from about 1874 until the town of Hendricks was built in 1900. Hans taught parochiol public school for a few terms until Burre Lien came to be the first public school teacher in 1879. Hans continued to be the parochiol (vacation Bible) school teacher for about 30 years. He was president of the church when they put up the first church building in 1884. "He maintained his wirery strength and continued to farm his 200 acres until the fall of 1928 when he was 87 years old." Hans' farm was about a mile SW of Singsaas Church.
