Individual Details
Andreas Jonsen Singsås
(1825 - 1849)
[Enge Larsdt Forosen from dag.FTW]
Went to America with his 2nd wife and children.
Singsaasboka bind 2 page 293 roughly translated: Andreas was known as a very difficult man, both for neighbors and others. Neither his wife Berit had a good life. His mother let on to this. Both women died in 1852, with a one-month intervals. Berit died two months after birth.
He fathered 11 children, but those after Esten are not clear to me who was mother - must come back to this sometime.
Received in 2013 from Andeline M Arneson Reed:
"Andreas Johnson (Joson) (1825-1898). According to the SingsaasBoka, he fathered 2 chiildren out of wedlock, a boy born in 1845 and a girl, Gjertrud in 1846. (I have the info on Gjertrud). At the age of 21 he married Bertha Kjelden and they had 2 children. John and Ola. Bertha died at the time of the birth of 2nd. one. Ola was raised by Bertha's parents. John (Stor Jo) came to America with his father. At this time they lived in Selbu area. Andreas could not make the payments and so lost the famr.
He mariied Anne Estensdater Buset (1832-1916) and they left for America in 1872. First stop was in Lansing, Mich. stayed two years. While there both Esten and Ingeborg were confirmed in the Luth. church. Next stop, Winnesheik Co Iowa and again stayed 2 years.
Spring of 1876 they came by way of covered wagon to Lake Hendricks. They decided to homestead in Deuel Co. Dakota Territory. (2 1/2 miles north of what is today Astoria)
It was in 1880 that Andreas decided to change his name from Johnson (too many of those around!!!) to Singsaas, his hometown in Norway. All his childred also took that name. John (my grandfather 1870-1958) lived on the Singsaas farm all his life. He was only 2 years old when they left Norway. Albert, the youngest son was born in US (American Made) He lived in Hendricks all his adult life, helped build and then serviced the water tower (I am told).
I have more but that should give you some clues. andeline
