Gilmore and cousin Odell Hanson went to Chicago on a railroad cattle pass in 1933 for the Worlds Fair. They stayed with Lars and Gertrude (Rognes) Bonnes, his Grandmother Marit's sister, for a week. They made the trip with $15.00 each in their pockets and came back boasting of having seen Sally Rand the famous nude fan dancer. They were 18 years old at the time.
