One of the previous contributors left this paragraph:
:According to the book "The Raglands..." by Charles James Ragland Jr. Book Titled, The Raglands: The History Of A British-American Family, Volume II, by Charles James Ragland, Jr., 1987, Stephen Pettus was imported along with his brother, John Pettus, as indentured servants to Virginia in 1637. Their father, Col., Thomas Pettus brought them to Virginia. Records indicate that Stephen Pettus patented two tracts of land in New Kent County, Virginia. The first in 1655 (500 acres located on the north side of the Chickahominy River, about 25 miles above its mouth). This is where he made his home. The second tract of land he patented was recorded in 1667 (450 acres on the upper reaches of the Chickahominy River, along the northern edge of the Chickahominy Swamp). This area became part of Hanover County, Virginia after 1720. He married and had two daughters, Elizabeth and Susanna. Elizabeth is believed to have died unmarried. Susanna married Evan Ragland and became heir to her fathers land.
There is no evidence that a Stephen Pettus was born in Norwich, Norfolk, England the son of Thomas Pettus.
If Stephen was born in 1619, then his supposed father Thomas Pettus would only have been 20 years old and would have not yet reached his majority.
An indentured servant was little better than a slave, having to work for a set period (usually 7 years) to pay off his passage before he was freed. Hence I think it is very unlikely that Thomas Pettus would have brought any of his close relatives to Virginia on such terms, let alone his son.
The rest of the paragraph from "Records indicate that Stephen Pettus patented two tracts of land..." is unsourced.
==Research Notes==This '''Stephen Pettus-16''' was originally attached to Thomas Pettus-9 and mother unknown. Noting this as merge of Thomas Pettus-9 into Thomas Pettus-8 is proposed. [[Fitz-Henry-9|Fitz-Henry-9]] 14:46, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
