Biography
Company B Roster}
James Alfred Oakes was born in Pittsylvania, Virginia in 1829 to William Oakes(1780-1846) and Sarah Phraley Oakes(1801-1868). The Findagrave page for him shows lifespan, notes wife May Ann Reynolds(1825-1920).
The Pittsylvania County History website lists James Alfred Oakes among gravesites for CSA soldiers of Pittsylvania. He was in the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company B. A similarly named man, James Allen Oakes, slightly older, was in the same unit. "Alfred" and "James A." Oakes actually appear on the same page in the 1860 census. James Allen Oakes died of wounds suffered at Gettysburg a couple weeks after the battle.
Yet a third James Oakes was in the 38th, Co. B. James Lafayette Oakes 1836-1920. He also lived in northern Pittsylvania in 1860. He was wounded at Gettysburg.
In 1850 in Pittsylvania, James Alfred Oakes is shown as Alfred in his widowed mother Sarah's home, with these siblings(est birth by census):
#Margaret 1827
#Ruth 1829
#JAMES ALFRED OAKES 1830
#Martha 1832
#John 1835
#Elizabeth 1836
#Margaret 1838
The 1860 census of northern Pittsylvania would show James Alfred simply as Alfred again, as did the 1870 north Dan River, Pittsylvania record, with wife Mary and the following children(est birth)
#Elizabeth F. 1852
#Lavinia Alice 1855
#Susan A. 1857
#Sarah Jane 1858
#William R. 1858
#Alfred 1860
#Cephas 1861
#Nannie 1864
#James 1867
#Benjamin 1869 William R. Oakes and Alfred Oakes are in the 1860 record, but not in the 1870. A FamilySearch profile for James Alfred Oakes shows William died in 1870, no detail on son Alfred. Their list of his children included duplicates.
The year James Alfred Oakes entered the CSA is in question because of the other James A. Oakes in Pittsylvania. There is an 1863 record for James A. Oakes, and an 1865 record for "Alfred Oak". An interesting finding is that in the 1860 census of northern Pittsylvania, these men appear on the same page, as "Alfred" and "James A." Oakes.
