Jean Scott

(1525 - Aft 1613)

== Biography ==

Changed Birth date from 1575 to 1525 as she married in 1550.Also Gilbert Eliott and Gavin Ellot were most likely the sons of Gavin Eliot as Robert died previous to both births. Gavin obviously would have been but if he could not have been born in 1575 as his mother would have been aged 50 if the estimated birth of 1525 is correct. The date for Gilbert may have been incorrect and could be before the death of his father & closer to the birth of Robert his brother. Notes added by [[Hathaway-1809|Eileen Hathaway]].

''Jean Scott's first marriage to Robert Ellot''
There is no documentary reference available for the marriage of Robert 15th of Redheugh and Jean Scott [http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=261&p=surnames.elliot] whom in the book ''The Elliots: The Story of a Border Clan'' is referred to as "a beloved sister of the family of Buccleuch", and who married subsequently Gavin Elliot of Baillilie & Stobs; despite this marriage being included in Keith Scott's ''Scott: 1118-1923'', William Fraser's ''The History of the Scotts of Buccleuch'', ''The Elliots: The Story of a Border Clan'' by by Lady Dora Eliott of Stobs and Sir Arthur Eliott of Stobs and ''Hawick'' by Douglas Scott [http://www.astro.ubc.ca/people/scott/book.pdf]
What is known, is that Robert Ellot signed a matrimonial contract on the 21st May 1550, binding his son, Robert Ellot to to marry Jean Scott "sister to the Buccleuch"
''The Border Elliots and the Family of Minto'' p:246 by George Francis Scott [http://dp.la/item/aa166d5c252eb1fb34c015ddc0330bf9] ..... "Such is the sum and substance of what we have to guide us in seeking to determine the parentage of 'Gibbie wi' the golden garters'. There is no ground for doubting that his father was an Elliot of Lariston and his mother a Scott of Buccleuch, for on that point the evidence of Scott of Satchels would be conclusive, even without the support of other authorities, but the difficulty remains of identifying the Elliot and the Scott who are referred to."
''Jean Scott's second marriage to Gavin Ellot of Baillillie and Stobs''
''The Elliots; the Story of a Border Clan'' by The Dowager Lady Eliott of Stobs and Sir Arthur Eliott 11th Baronet of Stobs provided a family tree for the Ellots of Redheugh listing the marriage of "Jean Scott daughter of Buccleuch" to "Robert the 15th Chief" with the note "Jean married secondly Gavin of Baillillie and Stobs" [http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/dtog/elliot_mark.pdf]
