John Alexander Edward Monroe

This is from the obituary of John Alexander Monroe: John Monroe, one of the early settlers of the county, died at his home south of town, May 24, 1908 after a brief illness, aged 90 years and 9 days. A short time ago he fell from a load of hay, receiving injuries which no doubt hastened his death. Otherwise he bid fair to live eight or ten years longer. The deceased was born in Pendleton Co. Kentucky, May 15, 1818, and came to this county in 1938. Nov. 5, 1857, he was married to Miss Meyers, a daughter of Rev. T. Sanford Myers. To this union we recall the names of four sons living, viz.: William, living in Oklahoma; Geo. and Frank of this county, and J. Ed of Nevada, who together with the wife, survive and mourn his death. He united in 1848 with the Baptist Church at Edinburg and lived a consistent Christian life until called to his reward at a ripe old age. The funeral services were held at Edinburg Church, Monday, May 25, 1908, Rev. James A. Rice officiating after which the body was laid to rest in the church cemetery. The death of Mr. Monroe brings sadness to hearts of many people outside the immediate family. He was a splendid type of citizenship. In all walks of life he was honored and respected for his sterling integrity and worth. It is an honor to be accounted a friend of a man like the late John Monroe.
