Henry Scrope
(Bef 1268 - 7 Sep 1336)
} ---- "Henry Scrope was put to study the law by his parents, and was a countor of the bench (or advocate) not later than 1292. In 1306, 1307, and 1308 he received various judicial commissions, and on 27 November 1308 he was appointed a justice of the common pleas. He may have been helped in his legal career by his friendship with Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln: he worked for the earl in the 1290s, acted as his executor in 1311, and in 1334 requested prayers for his soul. The earl allowed Scrope to augment his arms with the Lacy armorial bearing of a lion rampant." (Ref: Oxford Dictionary of National Biography) "Sir Henry Scrope built up considerable estates, including twenty-one manors, principally in Yorkshire, but also in Middlesex, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, and Rutland. With his wife, Margaret, perhaps the daughter of either Lord Ros or Lord Fitzwalter, he had three sons, all under age at his death. William, born about 1320, distinguished himself in the French and Scottish wars, and died on 17 November 1344, of a wound received two years earlier at the battle of Morlaix in Brittany. He left no issue, and his next brother, Stephen, having predeceased him, the estates passed to Richard Scrope, first Lord Scrope of Bolton and chancellor of England. Sir Henry's widow married Sir Hugh Mortimer of Chelmarsh, Shropshire, and lived until 1357."
