:(Rev.) ISAAC,4 *m. 1, June, 1725, Keziah Taylor (dau. of Rev. Edward Taylor and his wife, Ruth Wyllys of Westfield, Mass.), who d. in childbed, Dec. 4, 1727, a. 25; m. 2, Esther Hooker of Farmington, Ct., Oct., 1728 ; Rev. Isaac Stiles d. at North Haven, Ct., May 14, 1760, a. 63; Mrs. Esther Stiles
:Ret. Isaac Stiles was educated at Yale Col lego, where ho graduated Bach, of Arts in 1722, and A. M. in 1720; being the first of the name and blood that had a liberal education in America; his epitaph gives a summary view of bis history und character.
:"This monument is erected I To the Memory of I The Rev. Isaac Stiles, A. M.. I who was born in Windsor. July 30. I697, I received a liberal education | at Yale College: I Ordained to the pastoral office | In the church of North Haven, | November 11 .1721, I Where he served in the ministry .16 years, I And died May 14, 1700. etat 63. Having a mind ennobled | "With sublime and venerable conceptions l of the Most High. | And the perfiTt order and happiness of the universe; 1 illuminated with Itivine views I Of the economy of that part of it | Under the Mediatorial Dominion 1 Of Jesus Christ I Also tleink' intimately acquainted with the Sacred Oracles: I And having a natural gift of Elocution. I He preached the Gospel with Power and Fidelity: | A Friend to pure and undetiled | Religion | With a charitable benevolence | to All Mankind. \ Mors mihi vita est.licv. Isaac Stiles was a plain out-spoken preacher, if we may judge from the following: "Once on a time," during intermission on Sunday, he saw one of his congregation stealing his melons. In his afternoon sermon he referred to tile taking in a manner somewhat personal. After treating of that particular sin (theft), said lie. "no longer than this lord's day noon (pointing to a person in the gallery), I saw you. John Johnson, thou son of Belial, thou child of the devil, enter my garden and steal my melons." Rather close preaching that, but characteristic of the times, I suppose. Tills anecdote has been handed down in the family from my boyhood.—{Letter of lira Stiles, Ksq., of X. Haven, (1., 18S6.
