James A. Oakes was in the CSA in the Civil War. A Virginia record shows enlistment in 1863, and service in the 38th Virginia Infantry. Findagrave notes he actually enlisted in the 38th Infantry on March 10, 1862. The [http://pittsylvaniacountyhistory.com Pittsylvania County History website] shows James as being in Company B of the 38th. Unfortunately, James was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle was July 1-3, 1863, so he may have died of wounds thereafter(profile notes death July 15). Findagrave offers more, saying James "died as a result of his war wound".
In a list of Pittsylvania men wounded at Gettysburg from rootsweb.ancestry.com, a "Jas A. Oakes" is shown as having a leg amputated, so possibly James of this profile.
There was another James A. Oakes, namely [[Oakes-1359|James Alfred Oakes]], who was a neighbor of James Allen Oakes; appearing on the same page of the 1860 census. James Alfred is referred to as Alfred and James Allen as James A. Oakes. James Alfred Oakes would also be in the 38th Inf., Co. B.
There was actually a third James Oakes in the same unit, specifically [[Oakes-136|JAMES LAFAYETTE OAKES]] 1836 - 1920.

James A. Oakes was in the CSA in the Civil War. A Virginia record shows enlistment in 1863, and service in the 38th Virginia Infantry. Findagrave notes he actually enlisted in the 38th Infantry on March 10, 1862. The [http://pittsylvaniacountyhistory.com Pittsylvania County History website] shows James as being in Company B of the 38th. Unfortunately, James was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle was July 1-3, 1863, so he may have died of wounds thereafter(profile notes death July 15). Findagrave offers more, saying James "died as a result of his war wound".
In a list of Pittsylvania men wounded at Gettysburg from rootsweb.ancestry.com, a "Jas A. Oakes" is shown as having a leg amputated, so possibly James of this profile.
There was another James A. Oakes, namely [[Oakes-1359|James Alfred Oakes]], who was a neighbor of James Allen Oakes; appearing on the same page of the 1860 census. James Alfred is referred to as Alfred and James Allen as James A. Oakes. James Alfred Oakes would also be in the 38th Inf., Co. B.
There was actually a third James Oakes in the same unit, specifically [[Oakes-136|JAMES LAFAYETTE OAKES]] 1836 - 1920.
As of 1880 census, widow Margaret had not remarried, and was shown with several of the children in Callands, Pittsylvania.
