:: INTERESTING INFO::: A fellow genealogy researcher in California, Jim Farmer has this to say as he was researching his Farmer Line. ?Captain Henry Isham came to America with a grown daughter who married John Farmer at Bermuda Hundred, Henrico County, VA by 1656. This Isham daughter and John Farmer soon had three children: Henry Farmer (b1657), Phoebe Worsham, and Frances Elam. I was also surprised to see that the Belchers used not only the name Isham but also the name Phebe, just like the Farmers, Worshams, and Elams. Since then, I have seen the Henrico deposition showing John Belcher just like Henry Farmer, and I have found ongoing records for the Belchers and Farmers living as neighbors, which supports the fact that they were probably cousins. The name of John Farmer is a derived name. It appears in no record, but each of his children used the name and it is the name of his grandfather. Henrico depositions give Henry Farmer and John Belcher very close ages, ? It is likely that John Farmer and Robert Belcher married sisters. Isham, Bartley, and Phoebe are names that shows up throughout the Belcher line.

2 Robert Belcher is where the current genealogy in the united states started. The Belcher families moved to Massachuttes first, then Robert or his son John Belcher Sr. migrated to Virginia. The Appomattox River winds through Chesterfield County. Virginia between Chesterfield County and Amelia County Virginia. During the early 1700's many men patented land in the SW end of Chesterfield known until 1749 as Henrico County. They settled in the areas known as Skinquarter and Genito. Some of. the settlers were Richard Belcher, James Gates, John Goode, John Skelton, James Bailey. The earliest know record of Richard and John Belcher is in Henrico County, Virginia along with John Nash's Sheriff's bond along with JamesBailey. States: ". John Belshar Jr..1levy.clks fee, store debt. An item cancelled to order to Richard Belshar--note paid by John Belcher Sr." James Baileys son Richard Baily married Elizabeth Belcher. In 1759 James Baily bought 77 acres of land sideof. Skinquarter. This land was originally part of a patent of 375 granted to Richard Belcher in 1754 and was the first owned by the Bailey family.

::
:: :: Phoebe Isham is the half sister of Mary Isham daughter of Henry Isham and second wife Katherine Banks: Mary married William Randolph. Mary and William Randolph were the parents of Isham Randolph. Isham Randolph married Jane Rogers. Jane and Isham Randolph were the parents of Jane Randolph.:: Jane Randolph married Peter Jefferson. Jane and Peter Jefferson were the parents of Thomas Jefferson, President of the USA

Note: death date and place are not verified.
Robert George Belcher and his wife, Phoebe Isham is what we would call a “first generation” American. However, they were actually first generation Englishman on American soil. His father, William Thomas Belcher and his mother, Tabitha Ann Bartlett, were born in England, as well as Phoebe’s parents, Henry Isham and Elizabeth.
Henry Isham was also known to be a captain. We know that he wasn’t the first son in his family. It is likely that he did join the English military; possibly becoming a naval officer.
We know he arrived in Henrico, Virginia, around 1656. He lived on an island known as Bermuda Hundred that had been established as a port town some 30 years earlier. Located between the Appomattox and James Rivers, the Ishams were said to be located in the part known as Turkey Island.
There is conflicting information as to where Robert and Phoebe met and married. Most likely it happened in Henrico, VA. William Thomas Belcher’s son, Robert, was not a “first son” either. Perhaps, this caused the immigration toward the Isle of Wight some 70 miles away and other’s confusion as to where they married. Or not. Some say they stayed at Turkey Island. However, most people credit the Isle of Wight as the birthplace of their children: John, Phoebe, Bartholomew, Joel, and Edward.
