== Biography == Laurence Washington of Maidstone, Kent, was the 2nd son of Laurence Washington of Sulgrave, Northants and his 2nd wife Anne, daughter of Robert Pargiter of Greatworth, Northants. wid. of John Thompson of Sulgrave[https://archive.org/stream/wiltshirenotesqu07deviuoft#page/n11/mode/2up The Washington Memorials at Garsdon. His place of birth is unknown.
His father acquired the rectory of Stotesbury and presented his son Laurence as a way to send him to be educated at Magdalen College, Oxford on scholarship. He received his BA in 1567, become a lawyer at Gray's Inn in 1572, and was called to the bar in 1583.
He married twice: m. (1) lic. 31 Jan. 1578, Martha, da. of Clement Newce, Mercer, of London and Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, 5s. (4 d.v.p.) 2da. (1 d.v.p.) and (2) Mary (d.1605), da. of Sir Reginald Scott of Scots Hall, Smeeth, Kent, wid. of Richard Argall of East Sutton, Kent, s.p. d. 21 Dec. 1619. WNQ differs in stating that his second wife was Mary, daughter of Sir Thomas Scott of Scotts Hall, Kent, but Mary as the daughter of Sir Reginald Scott is confirmed on the memorial to Lawrence Washington at All Saints, Maidstone, Kent (see below).
He died at his house in Chancery Lane, London, on 21 Dec 1619 and was buried at All Saints, Maidstone, Kent.
His will was dated 10 May 1619 and proved in January 1619/1620. The principal beneficiaries were his son Lawrence Washington and his daughter Mary Horspoole, wife to William Horspoole, gent of Buckland, near Maidstone, Kent.

"Here resteth the body of Lawrence Washington. Esq., of the Family of the Washingtons, antientlie of Washington in the Countie Palatine of Durham; Register of the High Court of Chancery XXVII years. He had two wyvfs, Martha, daughter of Clement Newco of Hartfordshire, Esq. and Mary, daughter of Sir Raynold Scott of this Countie, Knight. By his first he had 5 sons and 2 daughters, Lawrence and Mary, the eldest only lyving. Lawrence succeeded him in his Office, married Ann, daughter of William Lewyn, Judge of the Prerogative Court. Mary married William Horsepoole of this Parish, Gentleman. His other daughter Martha married to Arthure Beswick, Gentleman, sonne of William Beswick of this County, Esq. He having lived a Vertuous life of singular Intiecrity in this place, being of the age of LXXIII yeares, died the XXI of December A.D. 1619".

There may have been a third marriage.
Ancestor of George Washington (great-uncle). He served as Registrar of His Majesty's Court of Chancery and was a resident of Maidstone. He married twice and fathered a total of six sons and eleven daughters. His coat of arms, which can be seen on his monument, features an ancestor of the Stars and Stripes of the United States flag.
