The Pepere family were neighbors of the de Fillemere (later Filmer) family in Otterden Parish, near Maidstone, Kent, as far back as the 13th Century according to local deeds and parish records.
Both families could trace their lineage back to the Norman conquest (1066 - William the Conqueror) although neither were especially wealthy before the 16-17th Centuries. Otterden or Otterdon was not particularly good farmland and when the Filmers fortunes rose, they moved to nearby East Sutton, buying Charleton, a noble residence, from the (de)Kemp family.

This is evidenced by the many previous deeds witnessed by them: a Simon Pepere in 1387,1398 and 1407 being followed by John Pepere in 1413, Simon Pepere in 1433 and Simon and William Pepere in 1436.Joan was the daughter of Simon Pepere."]
