== Biography ==Joanne or Joan May was the daughter of Nicholas May, a yeoman from the village of Downham, in County Essex, England. She was born there ca. 1390. Her mother's name is not known; nor whether or not she had brothers and sisters. At some time in her childhood, she and her family moved south from Essex to the neighboring county of Kent. It was there that she met and married John Filmer III, whose family were already substantial landowners near Maidstone, in the area of East Sutton, Kent.

Joanne May Filmer lost her husband in 1436 when he was 56 years old. His will, proven June 4, 1436, names their eight children and her father, leaving his estates' revenues to her for her lifetime and then to be divided among his living sons. In other land documents, in 1461, Joanne Filmer leased her lands in Otterden to her son Benedict; and on October 28, 1467, when she was over 75 years old, she released additional lands to her two sons Simon and Benedict.
