John Kerby (son of Robert Thomas Kerby and Catherine Tompkins)655 was born July 19, 1693 in Charles Parish, Pittsylvania Co., Va, and died November 19, 1772 in Pittsylvania Co., Va.He married Johanna Owen on 1729 in Goochland Co., Va, daughter of William Owen and Lydia Lansford.

John, sometimes also known as Jonathan, acquired a land grant December 1, 1740 in Goochland County, Virginia for 400 acres on a branch of Byrd Creek. This land was sold on September 20, 1748 and the family moved to Lunenburg County, Virginia, where on July 12, 1750, John purchased 280 acres on the south side of Pigg River, and crossing Snow Creek and Turkey Creek., which is located in today's Pittsylvania or Henry County.
John and his wife were dismissed from the South River Monthly Meeting Quakers because they joined the Baptist Church.

The first record of John Kirby, Sr. is a land grant dated December 1, 1740, for 400 acres in Goochland Co, VA, on the branches of Byrd Creek. On Sept. 20, 1748, John & wife Joanna sold this land & moved to Lunenburg Co, VA. The Quaker record of South River Monthly Meeting of Halifax Co, VA, shows that Henry Jr, Joanna, John Sr. & John Kirby Jr. joined this meeting from a Halifax Quaker meeting. They were dismissed on May 16, 1767, because they had joined the Baptist Church.

John Kirby, GoochlandDecember 1, 1740 for 400 acres in Goochland Co, VA; it was located "among the branches of Byrd Creek, bounded by William martin, William Banks, and Charles Massie. (see Virginia Land Patents, Vol 19, pp 836-38). John and Joanna lived there about eight years, but the record shows that on September 20, 1748 John and Joanna Kirby, of the Parish of St. Jas. Northam, sold all of the 400 acres for 65 Pounds current money to Thomas Massie of the same parish and county. The adjoining landowners were the same, there were no witnesses, and the deed was recorded 10 Sep 1748 (Goochland Co, VA, Book 5, pp. 467-69).

According to information sent to me, Danny A. McBee, by W. Jack Kirby, on December 8, 1997, John Kerby I is first found in a land grant dated December 1, 1740 for 400 acres in Goochland County, Virginia. He lived there about eight years and on September 20, 1748, he and Johanna, his wife, of parish of St. James Northam, sold all of the 400 acres for 65 pounds current money to Thos. Massie. He then moved to Lunenburg County, VA. where he and his wife and John II came under the care of the South River Quaker Monthly Meetings. On May 16, 1767, he and his wife were dismissed from the Quaker meetings because they had joined the Baptist Church. On July 12, 1750 he patented 280 acres on the south side of Pigg River crossing Snow Creek and Turkey Creek in what is present day Pittsylvania County, VA. He also owned land in Halifax County, Virginia. His will of November 19, 1772 made in Pittsylvania County, Virginia lists children and his wife, Johanna, as executrix.) [Danny A. McBee].

The book, Early Mine: An American Family History, 1634-1928, says that Jonathan "John" Kirby and Joanna Owen married in Charles Parish in 1731 in the Anglican Church. The same minister had married John's parents and grandparents. The author of the book is Robert E. Kirby and this information is on pages 20-21.
