Biography
}Temperance (Baley) CookeJamestowne Society: Baley, Temperance - A405; born 1617, died ca.1652, Henrico: (Muster of 1624/5); wife of John Browne and Richard Cocke. accessed 18 June 2019
Temperance was born about 1616-17 at Jamestowne, or more specifically Jordan's Journey, Charles Cittie, Jamestown Colony.
Temperance Baley owned land in 1620, when she was about 3 years old, as shown by this land description: Samuel Jordan was granted land including "388 acs. in or near upon Sandys his hundred, towards land of Temperance Baley, W. upon Capt. Woodlief etc. To have &c. Yeilding & paying to the sd. Treasurer & Company &c. Provided &c. Given at James City 10 Dec. 1620 &c."Nugent, Nell Marion, (1934) Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, 1623-1800, 1st ed. Richmond: Dietz Print Co., Archive.org accessed 8 Oct 2016 (Page 266).
To explain how a 3-year-old owned land, it is assumed she was probably the daughter of someone who died before 20 September 1620 (the date of her inheritance of 200 acres "in or near Sandy's his hundred"),Southall, James P. C., (Oct., 1943) "Links in a Chain." The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. Virginia Historical Society JSTOR.org accessed 4 October 2016 (Vol. 51, No. 4, pp. 380-393, citing p 384). and that her (assumed) mother was Cicely (Unknown) Bayley (later also Jordan Ferrar).Southall, James P. C. (Jan., 1942) "Cicely Jordan Farrar and Temperance Baley." The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. Virginia Historical Society JSTOR.org accessed 4 October 2016 (Vol. 50, No. 1, pp. 74-80).
Temperance is listed in the "Lists of the Living and Dead in Virginia, Febr 16th, 1623" among the living as "Temperance Baylife" (p 171)Hotten, John Camden, (1874) The Original Lists of Persons of Quality .... London: Hotten, Archive.org accessed 4 October 2016 (Pages 171, 209-10, 269). Certainly the unusual spelling was a transcriber's interpretation of a flourish at the end of her name (as was often done in handwriting of the time). This spelling is seen nowhere else. Temperance's name, in this list of the living, is followed by the name, Sislye Jordan.
Temperance is again listed at Jordans Jorney. Charles Cittie:
The MUSTER of the Inhabitants of JORDANS JORNEY taken the 21th of January 1624

The Muster of Mr WILLIAM FERRAR & Mrs JORDAN:
:WILLIAM FERRAR aged 31 yeares in the Neptune in August 1618
:SISLEY JORDAN aged 24 yeres in the Swan in August 1610
:MARY JORDAN her daughter aged 3 yeares borne heare
:MARGRETT JORDAN aged 1 yeare borne heare
:TEMPERANCE BALEY aged 7 yeares born heare

The muster goes on to list servants.

Based on these few records, researchers generally assume that Temperance was a daughter of Cecily/Sisley (Unknown) (who is assumed to have married to (1) Unknown Bailey, (2) Samuel Jordan, and (3) William Ferrar). No actual christening or marriage records are extant.

Marriages
Temperance married twice.
* She married, as her 1st, to John Browne who died by 5 June 1632,Possibly married c1630, Charles Cittie: "most records report Temperance as age 13 or 14 at time of marriage, location was likely Jordan's Journey in Charles Cittie where she lived with mother" ~ Barbra Cooner (via change explanation of changes made 15 December 2019). when the General Court ordered, "Whereas it appeareth by the account of Richard Cocke that hee hath disbursed 6397 of tobacco for the paymt of John Brownes debts haueinge maried the relicte of the sayd Brown ... [although] evidence is not conclusive, the circumstances suggest that Temperance was the widow Browne when she married Richard Cocke" (p. 88).Dorman, John Frederick, (2004) Adventurers of Purse and Person - Virginia - 1607-1624/5, Fourth Edition. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company, (Volume One, Families A-F, Pages 88).

About 1632, according to Minutes of the Colonial Council, Richard Cocke married the widow of John Browne and was appointed trustee and guardian of the Browne children. On 5 June 1632, "Whereas it appeareth by the account of Richard Cocke that he hath disbursed ... tobacco for the paymt of John Brownes debts haveinge maried the relicte of sayd Brown..." Further Cocke is to keep some calves for the "use of the Children of the sayd Browne" ... it is likewise ordered by the board that Richard Cocke shall have the use of sayd money towards the bringing upp of the Children untill they Come to age."Cocke, Virginia Webb, "Thomas Cocke of Pickthorn." In addition, on October 10, 1652, a land patent re-issued to Richard Cocke included 100 acres of land due by patent to Temperance Bailey, (patent September 20, 1620).}

=== Death and Legacy ===We have no record of the death of Temperance. About 1652, her husband Richard Cocke married (2nd) Mary Aston, which implies the death of Temperance before then.

==Research Notes ==There is a connection between Temperance Baley and Arthur Baley. Baley sold 1,000 acres at Henrico County to Robert Hallom's heirs.
Swan's Point at "Four-Mile Tree" was the old homestead of the Cocke family and the ancient residence of the Brownes. (1895) William and Mary Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol 4. Is this the family of John Browne???
One of the wealthiest and most influential families in Sussex county in the eighteenth century was the Browne family of “four mile tree”. These were neighbors to the Cockes (Richard Cocke, and his decendants, intermarried with them and held evidentaly very close relations with them) ...The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume 5 At Google Books

Spelling of maiden name: Also spelled variously as Bayly, Bailey (and Baylife), but in two of the three primary records we have, the name was spelled "Baley".
