== Biography ==
Joseph Phippen (b 1432) married Alice Belasyse .
We can read about Alice’s ancestors in a book called Collins's Peerage of England, Volume 6 by Arthur Collins, Sir Egerton Brydges, 1812.
The book says that the name of this family in old deeds and records has been written Belasise, Bellayes, Bellas from the town of Belasye in the bishopric of Durham. Belasius, a Norman Knight, came to England with William the Conqueror, AD 1066 and was general of those forces sent in 1071, to suppress Egelwinus, bishop of Durham, Earl Morear and others who betook themselves to the Isle of Ely which they held against the Conqueror, until the said Belasius reduced them to obedience.
His son Roland married Elgiva, the daughter and heir of Ralph de Belasyse, of Belasyse in Durham He owned Beuly in Durham. He died in the reign of King Henry I, leaving Ralph his son and heir. Then succeeded William De Belasis. William appears to have had a son Robert and a grandson William who inherited the town of Belasis; with the appurtenances and liberties by an undated charter.
Then the authours discuss Sir Rouland de Bellasise who married Mary, daughter and heir to Sir Henry Spring of Houghton le Spring, or Houghton on the Spring, in the bishopric of Durham, Knight, by his wife, the daughter and heir of Robert Bernard. The said Rouland by his marriage with Mary became possessed of the manor and lands of Houghton le Spring, and Beter, Burdon and other places as appear in his charter in 24 Hen III to which is a seal appendant, of a chevron between three fleurs-de-lis impaling an escutcheon between six martlets, the arms of Spring.
This Rouland de Bellasie was knighted at the battle of Lewes in Sussex on May 14th, 1264 when the King was taken prisoner by Simon Montford, Earl of Leicester and other barons. A figure of a knight in armour in a praying posture, with his sword by his side, reposing his head on a cushion, and at his feet a lion, is in the church at Houghton and said to be for this Sir Rouland de Belasis, who was succeeded by Roger, his son and heir.
Roger married Joan, daughter of Sir Robert Harbottle, Knight and had two sons Sir Robert and John as well as a daughter Elizabeth, married to Thomas Madison of Unthankhall in Wardale. The younger son married Mary, daughter of Roger Bertram and the elder, Sir Robert Belasise, Knilt by marrying Anne, daughter of Sir William Gouldbourne, had issue Sir John Belasise and four daughters – Mary, married to John de Lambton; Anne, to Robert de Fowbray; Ursula to James de Claxton; and Frances to William de Wickliffe.
Sir John wedded Oswald, daughter of Sir William Talbois and by her had three daughters and two sons – John, his heir and Thomas who married Mary, daughter of Thomas de Whitewell. John married Alice, daughter of John de la Hay with whom he had one daughter and two sons. William de Belasyse (son and heir of John) married Maud, daughter and coheir of William Bellingham.
By a deed dated at Wolveston, on the morrow of St. Mark the Evangelist, 1316 Alice de la Hay, relict (widow) of John de Belasise, releases to William de Belasise and Maud his wife, in consideration of a certain sum of money received, all her right and title to the land in which she and her husband were enfeoffed of by Hugh Marshall, witness Gilbert de Bello Loco and others. In 1317, William and Maud were summoned to answer Richard del Halle, of Wolveston and Isabel his wife, who pleaded, that they held of them, by agreement; one messuage and sixty acres of land in Wolveston: whereunto William and Maud made answer that they were ready to make good the agreement. William’s brother John disagreed.
William’s son and heir John was knighted. And by indenture, bearing date at Durham, on the Monday after the feast of St. Andrew, 1380, between the prior and convent of the church of St Cuthbert of Durham, of the one part, and John de Belasyse, on the other part, it is witnessed, that the said John gave and confirmed to the said prior and convent, and their successors, all his lands and tenements, rents and services, with the appurtenances in Wolveston (now called Oulston) in exchange for the manor of Henknoll, with the appurtenances. Whereunto Sir Ralph Eure, Sir John Coigniers and others were witnesses. Dated at Durham, June 16th, 1391, 14 Richard II.
The transaction spawned this proverb:
Belasis, Pelassis, daft was thy nowle,
When thou gave Bellassis for Henknowle.
Sir John married Alice, daughter of Sir Robert Hansard of Walwork, Knight. They had two daughters and a son Robert Belasyse. Robert, by his charter dated at Henknoll, the Friday after the feast of Easter, 1407 grants William de Lambton, jun Robert and Thomas, sons of the said William, his whole manor of Henknoll which was in order to a settlement; for he married Alice, daughter to Robert Lamplugh of Lamplugh in Cumberland and had four sons – John, William, Robert and Geoffrey.
John Bellasis died in 18 Henry VI leaving Alice, his daughter and heir, thirty years of age by Jonetta his wife, daughter of Thomas Tipping Esq whereupon William, his brother succeeded to the estate.
Our Alice married Joseph Phippen and had a son John. Alice died in Cornwall in 1489 and Joseph died there in 1502.
