Richard Forbes was born to Alexander Forbes, 1st Lord Forbes and an unnamed Stewart daughter, before his father's marriage.
According to the Exchequer rolls of 1451, Magister Richard Forbes, Canon of Aberdeen, provided furnishings for the king (James II). He was chamberlain of the king’s lands, as well as chamberlain of Mar, and elsewhere is called comptroller, or “Camerarius ultra spey.”
Appointed Chamberlain of the Kingdom in 1455.
He became Archdeacon of Ross between 1455 and 1460.
