He was born about 1357. They had one daughter, Jeanne. He was captured by an esquire from Guelders in a skirmish outside of Ardres in 1375. He was taken prisoner to England, where his ransom was subsequently sold to William le Latimer, Lord Latimer. He was granted his freedom in 1379, on condition that he release all of his fortresses to the English. When King Charles V of France heard of this , he transferred all of these places to Waleran's brother, Jean de Luxembourg. Waleran secretly returned to England, where he married '''Maud de Holand (Holland),''' the king's half-sister, as stated above. ... He wife, Maud, died shortly before 13 April 1392, and was buried at Westminster Abbey 23 april 1392.

Sir Hugh De Countenay, 3rd Lord Courtenay died 20 Feb. 1373/4, His widow, Maud, married (2nd) at Windsor, Berkshire in Easter week, 1380 (as his 1st wife) '''WALERAN DE LUXEMBOURG''', Knt., Count of Ligny (in Namur) and Saint-Pol (in Artois), etc., son and heir of Guy de Luxembourg, Count of Ligny (in Namur). His wife, Maud, was buried at Wesminster Abbey 23 April 1392. WALERAN DE LUXEMBOURG, Count of Ligny and Saint-Pol, died at Ivois Castle in Chiny 19 April 1415, and was buried in the church of Notre Dame in that town.

She married 25 April 1402 (as his 1st wife) Antoine De Bourgogne [Anton Von Bourgondie], Duke of Lorraine, etc., by Marguerite, daughter of Louis III, Count of Flanders. They had two sons, Jean [Duke of Brabant and Limburg] and Philippe [Count of Saint-Pol and Ligny, etc., and one daughter Jeanne. His wife Jeanne, died at Tervuren 12 August 1407. He married (2nd) at Brussels 16 July 1409 Elizabeth De Luxembourg, daughter of Johann de Luxembourg, Duke of Gorlitz, Margrave of Brandenburg, by Richarda, daughter of Albrecht II, King of Sweden, Lord of Gotland. They had one son, Guillaume. Antoine de Bourgogne, died at the Battle of Agincourt 25 October 1415. His widow, Elizabeth, married at the end of 1418 Jean De Baviere [Jean Of Bavaria]. They had on issue.
