Land records show that Robert Skerne married the widow Richard Northland. Furthermore, she is not the same Joan who was married to Unknown Despayne, who was clearly the daughter of Edward III (called herself "Joan Despaigne otherwise Southerey"), and who held the wardship of the Earl of Nottingham (a point confused by Cawley).
:Joan, second daughter of Alice Salisibury, was the illegitimate daughter of Edward III. She had been granted the sale of the marriage of the Earl of Nottingham which was valued at 2000 marks. In 1394, she (as Joan, daughter of Alice Wyndesor) was petitioning parliament to recover the 2000 marks. In the 1400, her mother bequeathed "Joane my younger daughter my manor of Gaynes in Upminster". In 1406, she surrendered the manor of Gaynes calling herself "Joan Despaigne otherwise Southerey". Her half-sister Joan was still married to Robert Skerne at the time, thus clearly differentiating the two Joans.
