===Death and burial of Constance of Castile, Duchess of Lancaster===(Royal Ancestry & Royal Tombs of Medieval England) She was the elder daughter of Pedro I of Castile and sister of Isabella, Duchess of York. Constance married John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster in 1371. She died on 24 March 1394, and was buried before the high altar in the church of St. Mary in the Newarke, Leicester. St. Mary's was a collegiate church and hospital founded by Henry, Earl of Lancaster in 1331 and enlarged in the 1350s by the first duke, Henry of Grosmont, who presented it with a relic of the Crown of Thorns. Leland described Constance's tomb as 'tumbe of marble with an image of (brasse) like a quene on it', but it is unclear whether the image was an incised brass or metal effigy. John of Gaunt's will of 1399 endowed a chantry at Newarke for himself and Constance, but it was not licensed until 1403. The collegiate church was demolished following the suppression of the college in 1548. Only the hospital chapel survives, and contains a female effigy and tomb-chest possibly originating from the collegiate church.
