}John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atholl was born on 6 October 1507.G.E. Cokayne; with Vicary Gibbs, H.A. Doubleday, Geoffrey H. White, Duncan Warrand and Lord Howard de Walden, editors, The Complete Peerage of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom, Extant, Extinct or Dormant, new ed., 13 volumes in 14 (1910-1959; reprint in 6 volumes, Gloucester, U.K.: Alan Sutton Publishing, 2000), volume I, page 313. He was the son of John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl and Lady Janet Campbell.
He succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Atholl in 1521. On 3 May 1522 he was enfeoffed. He claimed half the Barony of Rattray in his first wife's right (although it had long been a male fief), and whose father had already seized upon the greater part of the Rattray lands by force.Mosley, Charles, editor. In 1529 he famously entertained King James V of Scotland, the Pope's nuncio, and various others.
He died circa November 1542.
