Elizabeth Sutherland
(1488 - Sep 1535)
== Biography ==
===Birth===Elizabeth Sutherland, was the daughter of William Sutherland, of Duffus and probably Quarrelwood, and his wife Janet Innes, the daughter of Alexander Innes of Innes.Paul, vol. III, p. 196-197
Her birth date is not stated, nor her place of birth, but given there was a dispute over Duffus between her paternal grandfather and his niece which wasn't finally settled until about 1507,Paul, vol. III, p. 196. it would seem more likely she was born at Quarrelwood.
Her date of birth is probably before 1500 and perhaps in the period of 1495-1500, though it could be earlier. This is based on her second son George Sinclair, 4th Earl of Caithness, being born definitely before 14 July 1527, and as he first entered Parliament in 1542Cokayne, vol. II, p. 479 probably more likely born by 1521. As George's eldest son, and Elizabeth's grandson, John Sinclair, Master of Sinclair, was born about 1543Paul, vol. IX, p. 51, this would fit with George's birth about 1521 and Elizabeth's birth about 1495-1500.
===Marriage and Children===Elizabeth Sutherland married John Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Caithness, the son of William Sinclair, 2nd Earl of Caithness and his wife, Mary Keith.Cokayne, vol. II, p. 479.;
Again the marriage date is not mentioned, and although Cokayne, puts it at before 1527,Cokayne, vol. II, p. 479. in line with the previous discussion of Elizabeth's date of birth, it is more likely the marriage took place about 1515-1520.
There were four children from this marriage;Paul, vol. II, p. 338, unless otherwise stated.#William Sinclair, eldest son, who died before his father, without issue (''d.s.p. & v.p''.).Cokayne, vol. II, p. 579, note b. Some secondary sources have 1527 as the year he diedSaint-Clair, p. 190 but it isn't clear on the original source for this date;#George Sinclair, born about 1521 (see above), succeeded his father as 4th Earl of Caithness;#Archibald Sinclair;Paul, vol. IX, p. 50, based on ''Acta Dom. Conc et Sess.'', xxii, 41
#Janet Sinclair, married Alexander Ross of Balnagowan
===Later life===Elizabeth's husband, John Sinclair, was slain on 18 May 1529 in an attempt to recover the Orkney Islands,Cokayne, vol. II, p. 579
At this stage details of Elizabeth's later life are unknown. The source for the current information about her death; September 1535 at Aboyne, Aberdeenshire is unknown, and may have originated from an incorrect merge. [[Atkinson-107|Atkinson-107]] 20:06, 4 July 2017 (EDT)
