}James was the son of [[Elphinstone-19|Alexander Elphinstone]], 2nd Lord Elphinstone

and [[Erskine-281|Katherine Erskine]].
He married Lady Janet Leslie, daughter of George Leslie, 4th Earl of Rothes, on 10 June 1589. He died after 1599.

: As his parents were married in 1525, one can believe he was born after that year. We do know that he was not the eldest so he was likely born after 1530 but, as his father died on 10 Sep 1547, we know his birth was before May 1548. The midpoint of 1539 +/- 9 years is the best estimate at this point.
