Sir James "Sheriff of Moray" Dunbar

== Biography ==}
Sir James Dunbar was born after 1451 in Moray, Scotland. He was the son of Sir Alexander Dunbar and Isobel Sutherland.
Sir James Dunbar married Euphemia Dunbar (Dunbar) of Cumnock, daughter of Patrick Dunbar, before 21 June 1474 in Spynie, Moray, Scotland. He acquired the barony of Cumnock by marriage with Euphemia. They had a charter from Jas II dated 23 June 1474. After the death of his father James and succeeding to Westfield, retained Cumnock as his chief title. He had two other charters of confirmation 1477 and 1479.
Of Cumnok & Westfield. He was knighted by Jas IV and constituted Sheriff of Elgin & Forres, with the mansion house commonly called Castle Hill of Forres, to him and his heirs forever. The charter confirming the grants is dated 26 May 1488 (?). About this time he entered into a bond of mutual aid with the Captain of Clan Chattan. The last of this line, Ludovic Dunbar, who died without issue, sold the heritable sheriffship of Elgin in 1744 to the Earl of Moray. James was granted Sheriffdom of Moray in 1498.
Sir James Dunbar of Westfield was custumar of Elgin, Forres & Inverness, 1502.
15 Jan 1502: Letter of gift made to James Dunbar, s & h to umquhile Alexander Dunbar - of the gift of the relef of the five pundis worth of land the Sanquhar, with the tenandriis of the sammyn, pertaining to umquhile James Uruell of the Sanquhar 25 Jan 1502: A letter of gift made to James of Dunbar, son and are to umquhile Alexander D .... as above.
James died on 20 April 1504. His son James was served heir to his father in 1505.
